Dutch system of batteries around Cabedelo in 1631
Abstract
The Dutch constructed a series of considerable fortifications during their two attacks on Cabedelo in 1631 and 1634. Despite the use of mobile military works of contemporary military technology, the Dutch did not succeed in conquering the Forte Santa Catarina do Cabedelo in 1631. The system they set up to attack the fortress consisted of building batteries and guardhouses connected by trenches. This time the assault was undertaken from the east side of the fort.

First attack of the Dutch on Paraíba and the Forte Santa Catarina do Cabedelo. Their advance was realized through the construction of a series of temporary military fortifications like trenches, redoubts, batteries and guardhouses (see Drewisch?s map). They failed to conquer the fort.

Short description	During the attacks on the Forte Santa Catarina do Cabedelo in 1631 and 1634 the Dutch used contemporary military technology. They approached the fortress digging trenches and building step by step a series of small temporary fortifications like batteries, redoubts and guardhouses. While this approach was successful in 1634, it did not work in 1631. Drewischs map shows in detail the advance by the Dutch from the east against the fort of Cabedelo with the headquarters of the officers and a series of guardhouses and batteries connected by trenches.
