| In the old town of Frederickstad (nowadays João Pessoa) there were three gunpowder houses (casa da pólvora). According to Oliveira Sobrinho, the Portuguese built the first one in 1634, just before the Dutch attack. It was located on the western side of the settlement, in the actual neighbourhood of Trincheiras. |

Built in the old centre of the town of what is today João Pessoa, the gunpowder house (casa da pólvora) was, during the Dutch presence, located on the western side of the settlement, in the actual neighbourhood of Trincheiras. Between 1693 and 1704 another gunpowder house was constructed on the Rua Nova (now Avenida general Osorio). In the 18th century a third one was built at the Ladeira de São Francisco, near the Franciscan convent of Santo Antônio. This building was located where once the old fortification of Nossa Senhora das Neves stood. The construction of Nossa Senhora das Neves, usually linked with the fort at Varadouro, started in 1585, when the Portuguese, led by Martim Leitão, settled in this area. It is possible that this fortification has a link with the old church Nossa Senhora das Neves, also called Igreja Matriz, being the most important church in the settlement. |
