Abstract
On June 20th, 1625, Admiral Hendrickzs enters the Baía of Traição with his fleet and a retrenchment is built to shelter the sick. According to the report by De Laet, 700 men were buried on the beach. The site was soon abandoned a month later. It was the first fortification built by the Dutch in Paraíba.

The fleet of Admiral Boudewijn Hendricxsz enters the Baía da Traição on June 20th, 1625. De Laet reports that it took the Dutch two days to erect a retrenchment before disembarking their sick. Seven hundred men were buried here. The site was abandoned after more than a month, on August 5th .

Relation to nearby objects	The Dutch retrenchment of 1625 must have been situated near the beach on the southern side of the bay. *On another spot the French had erected a small fortification around 1585 in order to promote trade with the Indian people living in this area. Soon the fortification was attacked and destroyed by the Portuguese. More than a century later, in 1699, at the same place, the Portuguese would build a watchtower (atalaia) into a fort in limestone around 1715.

Short description	The Dutch fortification at Baía da Traição was built in 1625 and it was a retrenchment. It took the Dutch two days to erect the retrenchment before disembarking their sick. De Laet does not mention where the retrenchment was located, but he suggests it was near the beach, probably on the southern side of the bay. The Dutch retrenchment was probably erected on a different spot from that of the preceding French one and the Portuguese watchtower of 1699, rebuilt in 1715 in limestone.
